Stop for School Buses: It’s the Law!

State law requires all vehicles to stop for school buses when the bus driver activates the flashing lights and has the crossing arm fully extended.
Drivers who violate the law face a $500 fine.
Drivers can face criminal charges for passing a school bus on the right, passing when a child is outside the bus, or injuring or killing a child.

Riding the school bus is a privilege, not a right.

Rules at the Bus Stop

Get to your bus stop 5 minutes before your scheduled pickup time. The school bus driver will not wait for late students.
Respect the property of others while waiting at your bus stop.
Keep your arms, legs, and belongings to yourself.
Use appropriate language.
Stay away from the street, road, or highway when waiting for the bus.
Wait until the bus comes to a complete stop before approaching the bus.
After getting off the bus, move away from the bus.
If you must cross the street, always cross in front of the bus where the driver can see you. Wait for the driver to signal to you before crossing the street.
No fighting, harassment, intimidation, or horseplay.
No use of alcohol, tobacco, or drugs.
